I used to say that August was the Sunday night of the year when I was teaching. Now that I am retired and enjoying the rest, I can say that August is a wind down month. It’s a time when all the excitement of summer – the trips, most of the barbecues, and most planned activities are on hold. It’s time to regroup and turn inward to
prepare for winter. Like the bears we eat the ripe berries and look forward to curling up in our dens for Winter’s rest.
What a great description of July and August. I love the photos of the beautiful flowers that have survived the brutal heat of July. There is always hope. Thank you for your article.
And don't forget July's last gift. Sunflowers! Big beaming discs of in-your-face brilliance. August is only so happy to adopt them into his month and bring them to full glory. Thank you for this delightful flower-studded essay.
Yes! Sunflowers! Such delightful beams of brilliance and August does do us all the favor of showcasing them! Thanks for reading, Sue, and for adding to the conversation.
Gracie, what a breathtaking piece of writing! You captured the exact mood of late summer so poetically...July slipping exhausted out the back door while August struts in with naked lady flowers, fresh watermelon, and the best produce of the year. Paired with your stunning botanical photos, it brings the whole transition to life. Thank you for starting the month on such a grounding, hopeful note. I’m definitely ready for August’s presence!
love the personification of July and August..."....flitting out the back door" and thanks for the flower fotos...each month and each season brings its own gifts; we only need look for them
Yes, I did! Thanks, you for sharing such beauty. This is especially noted on a rainy dreary day in Chicagoland. I was just mentioning how quickly summer is going. He is a teacher with two children of his own and they are all getting ready to go back to school. It's time we just consciously enjoy each and every day as it presents itself to us.
Exactly! Be here now. AND look for beauty everywhere - even in rainy Chicagoland. I was there in October a few years back and was enjoying a lovely Saturday afternoon time downtown when it started to RSAIN big time - . This CA kid was amazed at how fast it went from sunny to heavy rain. I got thoroughly soaked instantly and was not prepared for that . But I laughed and the sun was back out in ten minutes!
Thank you, Patricia! I’m often awestruck by the natural beauty that surrounds us. To share it is the best response I can think of! Thanks for appreciating the post.
Great photos to accompany an excellent script.
The flowers in this world are just so gorgeous! They deserve to be celebrated all the time, right?

Oh! I like that! The Sunday night of the year… as a retired educator, I feel that one 100%

Beautiful images. Wish they could last at least to September.
